This show has been a two year project! SMSA faculty attempted to get the rights last year but didn’t get approved until after the production date. What makes the show so exciting is the local talent pooled together to make up the SMSA Players! The voices in characterization includes SMSA, alumni, past teachers, past parents and current families. It also involves many people who are alumni from Mr. Luce’s Lake George Youtheatre program. It is truly a show not to be missed!

About the Play:

Few albums had an impact the size of Jesus Christ Superstar. Within three years of its release in September 1970, it had spawned a Broadway and West End phenomenon, a London cast album and a box-office smash Hollywood film, and influenced many different rock operas that were to follow in its wake. Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the Passion, the workinterprets the psychology of Jesus and other characters, with much of the plot centered on Judas, who is dissatisfied with the direction in which Jesus is steering his disciples. Contemporary attitudes, sensibilities and slang pervade the rock opera’s lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events.
