SMSA Players
About our Players
The SMSA Players are a local theater group connected through the love of the arts and the St. Mary’s community in downtown Glens Falls. The inception of this group sprang from an effort to raise funds in memory of beloved Father Falcone, an SMSA alumni and local priest who passed in 1980. Since their firs production, GodSpell, their productions have carried on for over 15 years - combining teacher, students, parents, alumni, and local theater enthusiasts.
Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, telling the story of Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion. Loosely based on the Gospels, Superstar focuses on the personal conflicts between Jesus, his disciples, the people of Israel, and the leadership of Rome.
From Mr. Luce, Director:
“Our task is to protect the divinity of Jesus, no Catholic would want less, but allows people to see Jesus as a human being, like themselves, who has to go through the trials of humanity”, says Luce. “The audiences see Jesus as perfect, but able to feel the hurt of every event leading to his betrayal and death. We will try to set the stage and costumes in an accurate biblical perspective, careful not to ..’trivialize or demean’ the greatest story ever ‘Sung’!”.
