SMSA Announces New Principal

Updated: May 9, 2023

SMSA Principal Search Team and Administration has announced SMSA's newest Principal, Mr. Patrick Gormley - veteran educator from Queensbury High School.

A Note from Father Scott and Dr. Giovanni Virgiglio, Jr., Superintendent of Schools:

It is our privilege to announce that Mr. Patrick Gormley, a parishioner of St. Mary’s Parish, graduate of St. Mary’s School in Ballston Spa and Saratoga Spa Catholic High School, and 25-year veteran educator at Queensbury High School, has been appointed principal of SMSA, effective July 1, 2023.

A certified school administrator and certified teacher of English and Art, since 1998 Mr. Gormley has taught a variety of English courses at Queensbury, including a senior elective on Adirondack Literature that he conceived and designed himself.

In addition, Mr. Gormley has coached all levels of boys and girls sports, including varsity, JV and modified football; boys and girls lacrosse; and boys and girls basketball. He is a published writer and illustrator with a celebrated talent for drawing caricatures.

Mr. Gormley earned a BA at SUNY Cortland, a Masters in Education at Canisius College in Buffalo, and did his post graduate studies in Educational Leadership at SUNY Plattsburgh. He is the father of Liam, who graduates this spring from Cornell University, and Aiden, who begins officer training at The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., this summer.

Mr. Gormley was selected after an extensive interview process conducted by the Catholic School Office in collaboration with the pastor, parish community representatives, teachers, and school board members.

We look forward to Mr. Gormley’s leadership and contribution to SMSA’s continuing 140-year tradition, and we are excited about the future for our students, families, faculty, and staff. Mr. Gormley will be hosting “Meet the Principal” events this summer.

We deeply thank Professor Slater for leading us as our interim School Director this year and are grateful for her pledge to assist Mr. Gormley in making a smooth leadership transition.

And thank you for your continued support of St. Mary’s. May we continue to join our hearts, minds and hands to provide first-rate education in a joyful Catholic atmosphere for generations to come.
