Striking the Right Note
Music is an integral part of the SMSA experience beginning with the earliest grades. Even our smallest students participate in regularly scheduled music classes. K-5 students attend music class twice weekly, middle school students once a week.
Incorporating Orff instruments, these joyful music classes allow students to experience for themselves the wonder of music. They bang the drums, sing happy tunes, and improvise dance steps. As the years progress, students learn music literacy, are introduced to the classical composers, and are exposed to an almost endless variety of music.
For students with a particular interest in music, many extracurricular opportunities are available to supplement regular class work. Starting in fourth grade, students may join the Junior Band and receive instruction in the instrument of their choice. Older students continue training in their selected instruments and become part of the Senior Band and/or Jazz Band.
Middle-school band and chorus students from SMSA may (and frequently do) participate in New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) festivals.
