School Nurse - Mrs. Bachman

Dear Parents,

My name is Jane Bachman and I am the School Nurse here at SMSA.  My goal is to keep your child healthy and happy at school.  I stay in frequent communication with parents when their child has health issues to ensure that we work together toward this goal.

Health Education is an enjoyable part of my job.  I visit classrooms to talk about health issues.  I also help the school to bring in speakers for students, faculty and staff on various health topics throughout the year.

Each year I organize activities such as our "Walk to Alaska" which included participation of families, faculty, staff, and students.  I also work with local agencies such as Cooperative Extension, Warren County Public Health, and Glens Falls Hospital to bring educational programs to SMSA for our students.

Following are general health guidelines.   Feel welcome to contact me whenever a health issue arises with your child.
As always, stay healthy!

 From the Health Office
Here are some guidelines from the health office to make for a happier and healthier school year for your child.

• Your child should be without a fever (below 100.0F) for 24 hours, without the aid of medication such as Tylenol or Advil before returning to school.

• Your child should be without vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.

• If bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) is diagnosed then the student must receive treatment for 24 hours prior to reentry to school.

• If your child is excluded from school for any of the above reasons, they are also excluded from any extra-curricular school sponsored activity (sports, concerts, etc.)

• In case your child must have medication (even cough drops or Tylenol) during school hours, New York State requires:
1. A written doctor’s order
AND
2. Written authorization from a parent or guardian;
AND
3. The medication in its original or pharmacy labeled container.

If all three requirements are not met, no medication will be administered. Parents may come to school to give medication to their child.

• If your child needs to be out of physical education, a written doctor’s note must be provided.

• If your child is excused from physical education, he/she are also excluded from all extra-curricular school sponsored activities.  Your child can only do quiet activities at recess, no running.

If you have any questions or comments, feel welcome to contact the School Nurse at 792-3178 ext 1006.
