Technology

An outstanding array of computer equipment fills the SMSA building, opening worlds of information to our students. The technology lab — used regularly by all students beginning with those in Pre-K — is outfitted with new flat-screen computers, Palm Pilots and Smart Boards for interactive learning. In SMSA’s Elizabeth Doyle Theater, a Polycom unit allows students to attend virtual field trips around the world — and even beyond it into outer space.

Each classroom at SMSA has Internet access and a computer for student use, and SMSA faculty members are trained in incorporating technology into the curricula. Students are assessed on their mastery of computer operation, keyboarding, particular software programs and research techniques. The technology lab staff frequently works with teachers in other areas to develop cross-curricular projects requiring Internet research. All computers are connected to a network with strong filters, and parents and students must sign an Internet safety agreement.

SMSA students become proficient in computer skills such as keyboarding and in the use of many types of computer programs, including Desktop Publishing and Microsoft:
PowerPoint, Excel, Word and Access.
