Unique among area schools, SMSA’s performing arts program offers students the opportunity to experience the thrill of being part of a theatrical experience. Building upon work that goes on in every SMSA classroom, the performing arts program seeks to enliven students’ imaginations, expand their intellects and encourage their emotional growth. Whether they are working the lights, painting backdrops, running the soundboard or performing on stage, children benefit from the creative process and the joy of teamwork.
In our outstanding studio art program, too, each student’s creativity is encouraged in projects ranging from pottery to perspectives, mask-making to brass-rubbing. As they paint, draw and mold using chalk, watercolors, acrylics, tissue paper, markers, newspaper, feathers and an endless array of other media, students delve into new worlds of imagination and joy. In the Thomas V. and Elizabeth E. Meath Clay Studio, they mold and sculpt pinch pots, vases, figurines and magnificent creatures, each one a unique expression of personality and creativity.
SMSA student performers can now take to the stage in our on-site Elizabeth Doyle Theater. Located on the basement level, the theater boasts new seating, lighting and sound equipment. Students have also taken their productions on the road to the Charles R. Wood Theater downtown and to local residences for the elderly.
Performances range from: Stand-up comedy routines written by the students themselves Edgar Lee Masters’ “Spoon River Anthology” Former Broadway musicals such as “Snoopy” and "Big River"
