Music

The depth and breadth of the music program at SMSA is exceptional. From the earliest grades, music is an integral part of the SMSA experience. Even our smallest students participate in regularly scheduled music classes. Incorporating Orff instruments, these joyful classes allow students to experience for themselves the wonder of music. They bang the drums, sing happy tunes and improvise dance steps. As the years progress, students learn music literacy, are introduced to the classical composers and are exposed to an almost endless variety of music.

For students with a particular interest in music, many extracurricular opportunities are available to supplement regular class work. Starting in fourth grade, students may join the Junior Band and receive instruction in the instrument of their choice. Older students continue training in their selected instruments and become part of the Senior Band and/or Jazz Band.

The choral department includes two performing groups. Interested students in grades 3-5 may participate in SMSA’s Glee Club. Middle-school singers comprise our junior chorale, the Kerry Chorus. SMSA distinguishes itself each year by having one of the largest groups of students in the Glens Falls Symphony Holiday Children’s Chorus.

Middle-school band and chorus students from SMSA may participate in New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) festivals. Beginning in Grade 5, they may also elect to sing regularly at Mass and/or join the Recorder Ensemble.

In the Creative Arts Lab (CAL), students have the opportunity to flex their musical muscles by participating in exciting projects that foster creativity. With an emphasis on exposing children to cultures around the world, CAL provides a forum for:

  • Fun activities such as writing song lyrics
  • Participating in drum circles
  • Working on cross-curricular projects
