Family First

We believe that parents are the foremost educators of their children, and we are honored to share with them that sacred responsibility. Faculty members are available to meet with parents who have questions or concerns, and informal activities provide family members with opportunities to see the school from the inside. In fact, many parents and grandparents chaperone field trips, serve as playground assistants, read stories in the library, sell milk in the cafeteria and organize our fundraisers. They create enrichment activities, organize social events, assist our sports teams and serve on our school board. While building a strong school community and developing lifelong friendships, these volunteers also help the school financially and model to our students the importance of serving one another.

Communication between school and home is one of the highest priorities of the SMSA staff. Teachers frequently send home to parents notices regarding classroom activities, field trips and tests. Once a week, parents receive a Kerry Blue newsletter updating them on school news — important standardized testing, for example, and upcoming school-wide events.

Once a month, parents receive the “family envelope” containing an assortment of vital information including the monthly lunch menu, the Kerry Press (a teacher-written newsletter highlighting the classroom activities of each individual class), and fundraising and special event reminders and sign-up sheets. Most often, necessary responses can be returned in the same envelope, allowing for easy two-way communication between home and school.

Families who have access to the Internet will find important school information on our website through a secure login.  Here, students can visit our Teachers’ pages which often include homework and testing information along with helpful links.  Parents can check on the monthly school calendar for upcoming events and lunch menus.
